# Wayne County Board of Education Regular Meeting 5:00 p.m. 8/25/26

The Wayne County Board of Education’s regular meeting on August 25, 2026, included updates on school performance, staffing and facilities, as well as procurement and property decisions. The board approved purchase requisitions, orders and quotes exceeding $5,000, including district maintenance supplies from Kenny Queen Hardware and work by BS Rice to address water intrusion at Wayne High School; the latter was to be paid from Title PD funds. The board also approved agreements for Playmates Child Care Center, with a stated total contract value of $832,677.91, and Southwestern Community Action Council’s Head Start preschool services. The Head Start amount was garbled in the transcript. Board members also discussed ongoing utility payments for the former school property used by Playmates and other groups; an attorney is expected to provide an update at a future meeting.

Facilities updates included earthwork underway at Buffalo Middle School, weekend flooring and concrete work at Wayne High School, and planned contractor assessments for playground drainage and air-quality problems at Cerita Kenova Elementary. A contractor has been identified to weld the Crum wastewater treatment plant, with purchase orders expected to be presented at a later meeting. The board approved a motion, 4–0, to contact Kaufman Auction Services and pursue a contract to auction Dunlow and Genoa elementary schools and specified land parcels; the auction contract is to return to the board for review and approval. The superintendent also reported districtwide enrollment of 5,493, down from 5,679 at the same point the prior year. Public delegations asked the board to reconsider consolidating two third-grade classrooms at Lavalette Elementary, but no board action was taken on that issue.
