# Preston BOE Meeting-- October 5, 2026

The Preston County Board of Education held a special work session on October 5, 2026. The board approved the agenda and suspended normal delegation rules to allow broader public discussion; both motions passed. Discussion focused on declining enrollment and school funding, teacher recruitment and retention, special education staffing and training, student safety and accountability, school communications, and ways to attract families to public schools. Participants also discussed limiting technology use in early grades while maintaining access needed for digital assessments, and options for students using Hope Scholarship or virtual education programs to access selected district courses and activities.

Budget-related comments included the superintendent’s explanation that school meals receive an average federal reimbursement of $2.34 per meal and that child nutrition operations require an estimated $300,000–$500,000 annual subsidy from the general fund. Speakers raised ideas such as scratch cooking, meal preparation across school sites, and community or agricultural partnerships, but no purchasing decision, contract award, bid approval, or other procurement action was identified. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
