# Michigan City Board of Cemetery Trustees October 8, 2026

The Michigan City Board of Cemetery Trustees met on October 8, 2026, at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. The board approved the bills presented for payment and the financial and superintendent reports. It also approved the superintendent’s recommendation to purchase and equip a truck snowplow from Rigs Outdoor Power Equipment for $8,730, the lower of two quotes; the proposed setup uses a Western plow. The superintendent reported that Cintas service will not be renewed when its contract expires in mid-November, with the funds instead planned for museum pest-removal services next year. Recent equipment failures and repair costs were also discussed, but no additional purchase was approved.

The board discussed future cemetery development, including master planning for burial areas, drainage, roads and possible pet and scatter gardens; staff are still coordinating discussions with two planning firms, and no contract or funding was approved. A green-burial flyer and possible site signage are being reviewed, including confirmation that the described burial vault is available. The superintendent reported that a pair of swans was donated at no cost. Public comment raised interest in a pet cemetery and donations; members noted that the city ordinance allows gifts, while further development remains pending. A possible ordinance change concerning board membership eligibility was also discussed but not acted upon.
