# Michigan City Tree Board October 7, 2026

The Michigan City Tree Board met on October 7, 2026. Because there was no quorum, approval of the September minutes was postponed and the board took no official votes. The board discussed placing an order for 450 spring Arbor Day saplings from the state nursery; a member paid $255.72 by personal credit card, with the final cost subject to availability and reimbursement to be considered at a future quorate meeting. The City Forester also reported planning for a spring 2027 planting, supported by a U.S. Forest Service grant budget, with roughly 100 trees already being matched to planting sites. Separately, an 80-tree planting project at Trail Creek is being funded by an unnamed private-sector partner: requests for quotes went to at least four contractors, bids are due October 14, and the project is expected to be completed by November 6, 2026. No contract award was reported.

The Planning and Development Director described the city’s ongoing review of Article 17 of the joint zoning ordinance, including possible stronger tree-preservation requirements, penalties for unauthorized removal, and mitigation or a canopy-restoration fund for trees removed during development. The Tree Board asked to review an early draft and provide feedback; the director welcomed input, subject to confirming access, and said amendments would proceed through the Plan Commission and Common Council with opportunities for public comment. These are proposals under review, not adopted policy changes.
