# 10.7.26 UDO Community Meeting

Nash County, North Carolina, held a community meeting on October 8, 2026, to explain proposed updates to its Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), the county’s first major reevaluation of the rules in more than 25 years. The proposals address future development in unincorporated areas and include prohibiting new “foot lots” and shared driveways; increasing setbacks and lot-width requirements along busier roads; establishing standards for multifamily housing and accessory dwelling units; and requiring vegetative buffers and street trees in certain new developments. Other proposals would shorten maximum subdivision block lengths, require internal roads for major subdivisions, add emergency-access and turnaround standards, expand connections to public water and sewer where available, and create an optional conservation-subdivision model with permanently protected land. The county also proposed increasing the required elevation above base flood level for new construction in designated flood areas from one foot to two feet, and routing compliant subdivision plats to a technical review committee rather than the Planning Board. A data-center moratorium is already in place; data-center standards will be addressed separately after the UDO process.
