# 10/6/26 Board of County Commissioners: Waterways Advisory Board

The Kootenai County Waterways Advisory Board met on October 6, 2026, to discuss proposed changes to the waterways ordinance. Parks and Waterways Director Nick Snyder described concerns about abandoned vessels and houseboats anchored for extended periods, including vessels apparently used for rental businesses. Officials cited possible sewage and water-quality impacts, navigation and recreation conflicts, and limits on enforcement under current rules. The Sheriff’s Office noted that removing an abandoned vessel can cost approximately $10,000–$12,000, raising questions about who would fund removal.

No ordinance was approved and no formal motion or vote was reported. Commissioners gave staff direction to work with the Sheriff’s Office and County legal counsel on a comprehensive draft ordinance, potentially using Valley County’s rules as a template, and to explore a possible funding source. Staff also plans to seek coordination with Post Falls and potentially Coeur d’Alene. The discussion included possible rules for long-term anchoring, liveaboard use, and related business activity, but specific requirements remain to be developed.
