# October 5, 2026 Regular Business Meeting

The City of Kalamazoo’s October 5, 2026 regular business meeting included a progress report on the Kalamazoo County sports facility, targeted to open in fall 2027. The project reported that construction is underway and that hotel assessments began in June 2026 to support debt service on the facility’s bonds. The development team said it selected AV Tower Pinkster and Hurley Stewart through a design-build RFP and selected Sports Facilities Company as operator. Commissioners also approved consent items including a $168,600 pavement-maintenance change order, a $385,500 agreement with Jones and Henry Engineers for well replacements and water treatment plant work, a professional-services agreement capped at $6,000, changes to the Consumers Energy street-lighting contract, and a $40,000 budget amendment supported by a foundation grant. A separate cooperative purchasing agreement, capped at $220,000, was postponed for one month so staff could provide more information and evaluate options; the postponement passed unanimously.

The commission also approved a proposed one-year moratorium on data centers and similar uses, with the stated end date of October 5, 2027. The city manager reported that providers were identified for winter shelter services and that staff planned to bring forward a recommendation on October 19 to allocate more than $450,000 to United Way. Other updates covered water-system follow-up and capital improvement needs. Public comment raised concerns about infrastructure, safety, homelessness, and the purchasing-policy amendment approved at a prior meeting.
