# Community Meeting - September 30, 2026

The SCS School Board superintendent held an informal community meeting on September 30, 2026, focused on the district’s finances and a proposed school-funding referendum. He described declining enrollment and pressure on education and operations funds, including rising utilities, insurance, transportation, and student-support costs. The November ballot question would authorize a property-tax rate of up to 22 cents per $100 of assessed value and raise up to $3.6 million annually for eight years to help maintain staffing, class sizes, programs, transportation, and school safety. The superintendent cited an estimated annual cost of $191 for a home assessed at $200,000. This was an informational meeting; no vote was taken and no contract was awarded.

The district reported more than $2 million in combined savings over the 2025–26 and 2026–27 school years, including 13 certified positions left unfilled through attrition, reduced building budgets, and other cost controls. Procurement- and facilities-related measures included purchasing natural gas through a consortium of about 50 school districts, renegotiating a fuel rate, LED lighting upgrades, and ongoing school renovations financed through general-obligation bonds. The superintendent said the academic wings were nearly complete, with other building areas still requiring work. He also discussed possible future service reductions if the referendum fails, including eliminating additional bus routes and introducing walk or personal-transportation zones.
