# 09/30/26 Sustainability Advisory Committee

The Metro Nashville Sustainability Advisory Committee met on September 30, 2026. The Mayor’s Office Innovation Team reported progress on energy affordability initiatives, supported by a Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities extension through June. The city is developing philanthropic-funded pilots for energy-efficiency retrofits, including insulation work and post-winter-storm home repairs; the completed insulation pilot covered 63 homes, with estimated average savings of about $15 per month and 17 metric tons of avoided CO₂. The team also discussed a proposed battery-lending library for medically vulnerable residents and possible EV car-share work, subject to future funding. Elevate and RMI are providing technical assistance, including climate-plan review and a battery-storage feasibility study; no new contract awards, procurement votes, or contract amounts were reported. A youth climate-action opportunity, administered in partnership with Cumberland River Compact, offers eligible projects $1,000–$5,000 each. The committee also heard that Metro’s expanded high-performance buildings dashboard covers 60 buildings and reports $10.6 million in energy savings and nearly $2 million in water savings.

Other updates covered Nashville’s progress toward LEED for Cities silver certification, an extreme-heat governance workshop, and a forthcoming waste-characterization study. A member of the public urged the committee to establish an environmental task force and equity framework to broaden community participation. The committee discussed potential future policy work on utility-program access and transparency about residential energy costs, but took no recorded votes or spending actions.
