# SBA Strengthens AI Governance

The Small Business Administration has established initial AI governance structures and documented 34 planned or operational AI use cases, but its Office of Inspector General identified gaps in the agency’s strategy, generative AI policy, governance processes, inventory reporting, and classification of high-impact AI. The review also found that SBA did not provide supporting documentation for its decision not to classify the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan fraud-detection pilot as high-impact. SBA agreed to all six recommendations, and the OIG will close them based on evidence of corrective action. No new solicitation is identified; the findings instead signal increased oversight of the existing Palantir engagement and potential future demand for AI governance and risk-management support.

- Contractors supporting SBA AI should be prepared to document impact assessments, governance, human oversight, and processes for affected users, including appeals, as relevant to their work.
- SBA’s commitment to implement the OIG recommendations may create future needs in AI inventory management, privacy, cybersecurity, cloud, and fraud-detection capabilities, but the signals do not announce a procurement opportunity.
- The 2026 FedCiv Summit is scheduled for October 29, 2026; contractors seeking insight into federal civilian AI and IT priorities can consider attending.
