NASA Glenn sole-source notice for 1500°C furnace and fatigue grips for MTS 810 test frame

**Buyer:** Glenn Research Center
**Posted:** November 06, 2026
**Respond By:** November 22, 2026
**Identifier:** 80GRC027Q0002
**NAICS:** 334519, 333994, 333414

NASA Glenn Research Center is seeking a high-temperature furnace and fatigue grips for its existing MTS 810 test frame.
- **Procurement approach:** NASA intends to make a firm-fixed-price sole-source award. This is not a request for competitive quotes; interested organizations may submit capability statements showing how competition could benefit the Government.
- **Furnace:** One three-zone hybrid furnace, with a MoSi2 center zone and Kanthal top and bottom zones, for specimen temperatures of 700°C to 1500°C. It must heat from room temperature to 1500°C in under three hours and have an accessible clamshell design, repeatable closure, extensometer and thermocouple ports, a temperature controller, and mounting hardware for the MTS 810’s 2.5-inch columns spaced 23.5 inches apart.
- **Fatigue grips:** High-temperature grips for use up to 1500°C, with thermal shielding, integral cooling, ceramic heat shields, and over-temperature protection. Requirements include a specimen thermal gradient below 1%, capacity of 25 kN for round specimens and 4–7 kN for flat specimens, fully reversed loading at 5 Hz or higher, maintained preload and alignment, and bending strain below 5%. The grips must interface with the frame’s 1-inch-14 threads.
- **Included interfaces and accessories:** Air- and water-cooling assemblies; flat-specimen wedge interfaces for 0–4.77 mm specimens; and round-specimen adapters for 1/4-28 and 1/2-20 threads. Supported specimens are up to 150 mm overall length, with 28 mm threaded at each end.
- **Services and delivery:** One week of on-site installation and training is required. Delivery is due nine months after receipt of order.

### Description

THIS IS A NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD A SOLE SOURCE CONTRACT AND IS NOT A REQUEST FOR COMPETITIVE QUOTES.

High Temperature Furnace and Grips

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Glenn Research Center (GRC) has a requirement for a 1500°C high temperature furnace and fully reversed fatigue rated grips to be used for testing of metallic and composite samples on an existing MTS 810 servo-hydraulic test frame. Specifically, the furnace and grips must meet the minimum requirements:

One 1500°C High Temperature Furnace and specifications consisting of the following:

Three zone hybrid furnace: MoSi2 center zone and kanthal top and bottom zones

Must be capable of achieving specimen temperatures from 700°C to 1500°C

Must heat to 1500°C from room temperature in less than 3 hours

Clamshell design that opens wide to maximize accessibility for specimen and grip installation

Must easily return to test (closed) position to maintain repeatability between tests

Must be designed to accommodate MTS and other high-temperature axial extensometers

Must have dual extensometer ports with interchangeable inserts

Must have dual thermocouple ports with interchangeable inserts

Ridid column mounting design to minimize vibration induced disturbances

Temperature controller

Must include furnace mounting hardware to existing MTS 810 load frame with 2.5” diameter columns with a center to center column spacing of 23.5”

1500°C High Temperature Grips and specifications consisting of the following:

Must be engineered to work with 1500°C furnace to enable precise control of thermal gradients

Thermal shielding and integral cooling must enable grip to work at temperatures to 1500°C and reduce overall thermal gradient while protecting the grip materials from excessive temperature (over 1000°C) enabling long life performance

This grip must be provided with ceramic heat shields for improved durability

Allow for specimen temperatures up to 1500°C

Less than 1% thermal gradient over the specimen gage length

Rated at 25kN for round specimens

Rated at 4-7kN for flat specimens

Must maintain constant preload on specimen through test loading

Must maintain accurate alignment and low bending strains

Must achieve less than 5% bending strain on a representative test specimen

Must include integrated grip over temperature protection

Must include air colling assembly

Must include water cooling assembly

Must include flat specimen interfaces (includes chamber and piston rod): wedge set, high temp 0-.188 (0-4.77mm)

Must include threaded round specimen interfaces (includes chamber and piston rod): ¼-28 and ½-20 threaded adapters
