Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking first-article fabrication of metal components and tooling for a HIP Can Study.
- **Buyer:** Battelle Memorial Institute, Pacific Northwest Division, operator of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Richland, Washington.
- **Scope:** Fabricate 17 component line items, plus two sets of HIP can tooling. The component materials include carbon and DQ steel, 6061-T6 aluminum, e-beam-weldable stainless steel, and **Haynes 214** foil. The technical specification provides quantities and part numbers; related manufacturing drawings provide detailed dimensions and fabrication instructions.
- **Products and quantities:** 25 each of four steel shims; 50 each of three aluminum pocket plates; 25 each of three foil parts; 50 each of two 10-gauge strongbacks; 250 18-gauge strongbacks; and 25 each of DQ-steel HIP cans and lids, and stainless-steel HIP cans and lids.
- **Tooling and engineering:** One DQ-steel HIP-can tooling set and one stainless-steel HIP-can tooling set. Each requires non-recurring engineering and tooling design, with design/simulation results and tooling presented for review before fabrication milestones.
- **Notable requirements:** Apply Neolube 1.1 coating to a target thickness of 0.4 mil and bake at 75°C for 10 minutes where specified; deburr or break sharp edges; individually vacuum-seal parts in 5-mil Mylar bags or approved equal; label and mark parts with SAP, lot, and serial numbers. Drawings govern dimensions and tolerances. The solicitation also calls for quality-system capability and conformance and material/test documentation.
- **Material detail to confirm:** The technical specification identifies the foil as Haynes 214, while drawings describe U-10Mo core with a zirconium coating. Confirm the controlling material requirement before fabrication.
- **Vendors/OEMs named:** Battelle Memorial Institute, Pacific Northwest Division; DOE; PNNL; and **Haynes International, Inc.** (associated with the named Haynes 214 material). No reseller or fabrication vendor is identified.
- **Timing:** The RFP sets a required delivery/completion deadline. It does not specify a contract term, option years, or annual subscription.
