The Sumter School District Board Policy Committee met on August 24, 2026, to review policy amendments and discuss future policy work. Proposed updates included removing individual names from the District Wellness Committee policy; correcting school-day language to match state requirements; replacing “foreign language” with “world language”; extending monitoring of English learners from two to four years to align with state requirements; updating high-school grade-classification credit thresholds to 6, 12, and 18 credits and clarifying early graduation eligibility; and considering a two-consecutive-semester enrollment requirement for valedictorian and salutatorian eligibility. The committee also reviewed a nonresident-student admission policy and administrative rule establishing application, capacity, notification, fees, and appeal procedures, with implementation planned for the 2027–28 school year. These items were identified for recommendation or further consideration by the board; the transcript does not record final board votes on them.
Discussion items for future review included water-bottle rules and potential family costs, dress-code measurement clarification, use of AI in schools, and whether facility-naming rules should permit recognition of living individuals. The committee favored taking the facility-naming question to the full board. Staff said the district’s current code of conduct addresses the new school-threat requirements. No contracts, purchases, spending approvals, or other procurement activity were identified.
