At its October 6, 2026 Economic Development Committee meeting, the City of Wausau discussed redevelopment of 1300 Cleveland Avenue, a brownfield site. Staff reported the city had been selected as a candidate for EPA technical assistance, with details to return for formal committee consideration; state brownfield grant programs were also identified as possible support for cleanup and redevelopment. The committee approved a motion directing staff and the city attorney to draft a deed restriction reflecting appropriate non-industrial uses for future review. Members also discussed ongoing site uses and the need to clean up the property. The restriction is intended to guide future use but could be changed by a future council, and members raised concerns about wording that might unduly discourage potential developers.
The committee approved a six-month due diligence/access agreement for the UWSB at Wausau campus property, allowing site testing and architectural, engineering, and environmental review while staff continues discussions with the school district about potential joint use. Funding for the feasibility work is scheduled to return to the council after a prior motion failed and was reintroduced. The committee also approved Habitat for Humanity’s proposal to acquire city-owned property at 424 Burn Street for approximately $12,000, with part of the parcel expected to be sold to an adjoining owner and the remainder used for a Habitat home. Members voted to enter closed session to discuss possible purchase negotiations for 108 Myron Street; no purchase terms were disclosed in open session.
