The WCAT Wakefield Superintendent’s Update, dated October 6, 2026 (titled “October 2nd, 2026”), discussed school facilities, enrollment, programming, and budget pressures. The new Northeast Vocational School building is being outfitted with furniture, fixtures, and equipment; the district expects to move in around the beginning of December and start classes there on January 5. The speakers also discussed adding preschool capacity at Greenwood, including the possibility of funding another classroom, and pursuing a feasibility study for the 130-year-old Greenwood School to assess accessibility, heating and cooling, building condition, and enrollment needs. They described a possible later application to the Massachusetts School Building Authority, but no funding decision or procurement approval was reported.

The superintendent said rising expenses—particularly transportation costs driven by fuel and labor, as well as out-of-district tuition—are outpacing town and state revenue. The district is working with town officials and advocating for increased state support through Chapter 70 and circuit-breaker funding. No contract awards, vendors, dollar amounts, motions, or votes were identified. Other discussion covered curriculum implementation, student achievement, and a planned open house at the former school building to benefit the scholarship foundation.
