The KIBSD Board of Education held a work session on October 5, 2026. The board discussed the district’s leadership transition, student behavior supports, state assessment results, class sizes, and budget planning. No contracts, bids, vendor selections, or procurement awards were presented, and no spending-related votes were taken. The acting superintendent said the board would support him with contractual services or additional staffing if needed; board members also discussed whether future budget resources should be directed toward staffing and core academic needs.
The board discussed forming a technology committee to advise on device use across grade levels, a possible device refresh decision, and AI’s instructional effectiveness; committee membership and next steps remain to be determined. Members also discussed the scope and timing of the community budget advisory committee, including its role in informing possible school-closure decisions. The superintendent reported that a $7,000 donation helped fund a traveling planetarium program, and noted that attendance affects state funding. A student asked the board to consider submitting a mental-health and suicide-prevention resolution to the Alaska Association of School Boards; the board planned to check submission and approval requirements before acting.
