The October 6, 2026 Alachua County Public Schools Board workshop focused on athletic facilities and stadium options for Gainesville, Buchholz, and Eastside high schools, with a consultant presenting site concepts and preliminary cost analysis. Gainesville High School was deemed infeasible for a campus stadium because of wetlands and site constraints. Buchholz and Eastside concepts were possible but faced limitations involving parking, stormwater, field orientation, access, and other site conditions. Citizens Field and other neutral-site options were also discussed. Preliminary figures included about $1.2 million for a turf field, roughly $2 million for a turf field and related improvements at Buchholz, somewhat more at Eastside, and a potential $500,000 first-cost saving from natural grass rather than artificial turf. Board members also discussed possible capital funding through certificates of participation (COPs), sponsorships and naming rights; the district’s half-cent sales tax was described as unavailable for athletics. These were planning estimates, not final procurement approvals.

Public commenters raised concerns about travel, safety, scheduling, costs to families, and unequal access to fields, and urged investment in school-based facilities, including facilities for girls’ sports. The superintendent presented potential athletic improvements across the high schools, including turf fields and track work, and board members indicated support for considering additional turf fields regardless of the stadium decision. The workshop transcript contains no formal motion or vote on contracts, funding, or a stadium site; the board’s discussion of the stadium choice remained ongoing.
