The October 6, 2026 Amherst County Board of Supervisors meeting included several budget and contracting discussions. Staff presented an analysis of bringing county janitorial services in-house versus continuing contracted services. The county has two contracts: The Budd Group, at $211,908.62 for the current fiscal year, and Independent Cleaning, at approximately $110,020; the latter contract expires this fiscal year and will need to be put out for RFP. Staff’s in-house scenario included six positions and startup costs, with projected break-even in FY2031, but the presentation was informational only. Board members generally favored continuing contracted cleaning and considering the RFP results before revisiting the issue; no procurement decision was made.

The board approved setting aside $20,000 in a designated fund for Amherst County Public Schools’ underground storage tanks and authorized the county administrator to sign the required DEQ guarantee, with the arrangement intended to continue until the county is back on schedule with its audit. The board also approved restoring $150,000 to the sheriff’s budget from unused debt-service funds and affirmed the established allocation of fine revenue: 80% for sheriff’s department needs and 20% for parks and recreation facilities. Separately, GNX Power introduced its proposed Beck Creek advanced nuclear energy project, which remains in early environmental and technical due diligence; no county commitment or procurement action was taken. An ordinance aligning county provisions with state legislation advanced to a public hearing, including changes concerning manufactured homes and temporary wireless-facility support structures.
