At the October 6, 2026 Dana Point City Council meeting, the council considered a proposed Lantern Bay Park improvement and right-of-entry/construction agreement involving Ocean Cliffs at Dana Point, a JW Marriott resort. The project would renovate the amphitheater, add a botanical garden and paths, and remove and replace some trees; speakers and council members debated tree removal, shade, and alternatives. The council postponed its decision until the next meeting and directed a subcommittee to explore options for retaining or relocating trees and other design changes. The agreement and park plan were not finally approved at this meeting. Staff described the resort as funding the proposed improvements, with ongoing city maintenance expected within the existing budget.

The council also reviewed the unaudited FY2025–26 year-end results and FY2026–27 budget adjustments. Staff reported an $8.3 million excess fund balance and recommended placing approximately $2 million in reserves, $1.34 million in the capital improvement program, and $1 million in the facilities fund; it also presented carryovers for contracts and purchase orders in progress. The council approved the financial report and budget actions, along with resolutions on salary ranges and health-benefit allowances, without opposition. A municipal-code update to appeals procedures also received first-reading approval.
