The City of Iowa City Economic Development Committee met on September 30, 2026. It approved the July 1 meeting minutes and received a Kirkwood Community College update on credit and noncredit programs, workforce training, and employer partnerships. Kirkwood described its training partnership with the City, including heavy equipment operator coaching, and discussed workforce pipelines, English-language instruction, and plans for healthcare training at Dream City. No new Kirkwood contract or purchasing action was presented.

The committee considered FY2028 arts funding recommendations within a proposed $750,000 request—$500,000 from local option sales tax and $250,000 from the general fund. It approved a recommended $385,000 contribution to the arts endowment. Staff also recommended $315,000 in arts anchor awards, about 15% above FY2027: UNESCO City of Literature ($66,000), Summer of the Arts ($74,000), Englert Theater ($77,000), FilmScene ($45,000), Riverside Theater ($33,000), and Public Space One ($20,000). Public Space One would join the program for the first time. The transcript records public comments in support of the funding but does not show a vote on the award recommendations or the proposed Arts Alliance sponsorship. Staff said eligibility would likely remain unchanged until the endowment can be drawn down, anticipated in FY2033.
