🏗️ Construction & Infrastructure ⚡ Energy & Utilities Physical Infrastructure

At the City of Columbia City Council work session on October 6, 2026, council received a University of South Carolina presentation on a proposed utility-line consolidation along approximately 2,000 feet of Harden Street near the Bull Street development and health sciences campus. The estimated cost to relocate the lines is about $1 million. The university said the change could allow wider sidewalks, lighting, and mature shade trees; council members discussed whether to bury distribution lines, improve the appearance of poles, and develop landscaping options. The university agreed to consult Dominion Energy about costs and alternatives and to bring additional concepts to a public input meeting scheduled for October 13. Potential city, county, and transportation funding or cost-sharing was raised, but no funding commitment or procurement award was made.
