The Wausau Finance Committee’s first 2027 budget workshop was held October 5, 2026. The committee reviewed a proposed city levy of $40.63 million, an increase of $2.5 million, and an estimated tax rate of $9.24 per $1,000 of assessed value. The budget includes $1.45 million associated with the referendum, holds four additional vacancies, and contains no new fees, though some existing fees may be adjusted. The city reported a $44,000 increase in computer-aid revenue received after the budget book was prepared. Discussion also covered higher operating costs, including a 9.6% health-insurance increase, and the need to address long-term motor-pool funding and revenue options. No Finance Committee vote on the budget or fee schedule was taken; members discussed bringing possible amendments forward later in the budget-session week.
Capital and purchasing topics included the proposed $1.7 million 2027 capital budget, the increase in asphalt overlay funding from $600,000 to $800,000, and planned borrowing for water and wastewater projects, including lead-service-line work. Staff described nearly $2.5 million in open rolling-stock purchase orders and long delivery timelines for vehicles. A supplier offered roughly $200,000 in savings if the city prepaid for a replacement aerial fire truck, but no purchase or prepayment decision was made. Public Works also described surveying services contracted through Becker Hoppe. Parks staff reported that the Parks Committee had approved a contract for hazardous-tree work at Pleasant View Park, without stating the amount or contractor. The committee also discussed keeping fees largely flat and considering future alternative revenue sources; these were discussions rather than adopted policy changes.
