At its October 5, 2026 meeting, Roanoke City Council adopted several FY2027 budget and funding ordinances. These included an appropriation of renewed Commonwealth funding for the Greater Roanoke and New River Valley Small Business Development Center, whose additional capacity supports local businesses; amendments to the city public schools’ general-fund budget; and an appropriation of Commonwealth, federal, and private grant funds for school programs. Council also authorized acceptance and appropriation of U.S. Small Business Administration funds for laboratory equipment at ROVA Labs, intended to support life-sciences businesses. No dollar amounts were stated. The ordinances were adopted by roll-call vote; ROVA Labs equipment had not yet been selected, and staff said there was no local-match requirement.
Other procurement- and infrastructure-related discussion included an update that the city’s existing Otis Elevator Company contract was awaiting custom-manufactured parts, with council asking staff to provide progress updates. Public Works reported its winter preparations, including a completed salt supply under a contract involving Cargill. A speaker urged near-term pedestrian-safety improvements on high-injury corridors and a follow-up schedule from staff; no council action on that request is recorded. Residents also raised concerns about the Wood Haven technology-park proposal and transparency around the property, but the transcript records no related council decision or contract award.
