The City of San Gabriel Community Services Commission held its regular meeting on October 5, 2026. Staff reported that Smith Park pool work included replacement of a malfunctioning chemical-control system and an emergency repair to a large water pipe; the control-system replacement is already complete and has reduced staff workload and waste of chemicals and water. Replacing the pool’s chemical tanks is the next urgent project, with staff considering a switch to powder chemicals; no cost, vendor, or purchasing decision was provided. Staff is preparing a statewide park planning grant application for the pool renovation with assistance from new grant consultant Townsend, and is also assessing whether to apply for an LWCF grant. Commissioners discussed improving community outreach and participation to strengthen the application. No grant award or procurement-related vote occurred.

Staff also reviewed fall events and youth programs. For the holiday tree lighting, staff said additional funds had been added and that savings from scaling back stage lighting would go toward activities; specific amounts and vendors were not stated. The Turkey Trot uses a for-profit event provider, but the provider was not named and no contract action was considered. The commission approved the August 3, 2026 meeting minutes by a 4–0 vote, with one commissioner absent. Commissioners also discussed collecting participation and marketing metrics to guide future event planning; no related spending action was taken.
