At its October 5, 2026 meeting, the Burlington City Council approved a resolution to purchase a chipper for the Forestry Division. The equipment was budgeted at $80,250 through the FY2027 capital improvement program, but its quoted price had risen by $14,750 since the prior fall. The city removed the existing chipper from the planned trade-in and listed it on GovDeals; bidding had reached $18,200, and the expected sales-tax-fund balance contribution had fallen from $10,250 to $8,550. The council also approved a Section 106 Memorandum of Agreement for the Cascade Bridge project, a step toward required historic-preservation and federal environmental clearances. The city anticipates bidding the bridge project through the DOT in late winter or early spring, with construction expected to begin in late spring or early summer; no construction contract was awarded at this meeting.
The consent agenda, approved in one motion, included claims and payroll, permits, nuisance abatements, a 2026 Justice Assistance Grant interlocal agreement with Des Moines County, and an agreement for continued use of county-owned recycling containers. The council also set future public hearings on two property sales, an encroachment agreement, and an urban-renewal-area amendment. Other discussion included adoption of the Fire Department’s 2026–2030 strategic plan and updates on potential tax-increment-financing agreements and a major regional steel-mill proposal; no related spending approvals or vendor selections were reported.
