The South Bend Community School Corporation’s regular board meeting on October 5, 2026, included several procurement and contract actions. The board approved an annual purchasing-threshold resolution 6–1 to align the district’s applicable threshold with the state’s $50,000 guideline, citing compliance and administrative-efficiency concerns; the treasurer said formal bidding would still apply above $150,000. A board member objected that the change could reduce bidding opportunities. The board also approved the Gear Up after-school tutoring program for $51,840 (6–1), the CACF meal-services agreement renewal for Head Start in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties (unanimous), school-based mental-health services involving Paramount Health Data Project and Oaklawn (6–1), a K–12 coalition agreement supporting the district’s grow-your-own teacher pathway (6–1), and professional-services agreements with Baker Tilly (6–1). No dollar amounts were stated for the latter agreements. Public commenters raised questions about student-data protections under the mental-health project and the district’s costs and retention expectations under the teacher pathway agreement; the board approved both items. A commenter also questioned private transportation spending of $400 per day for 50 days, but no board action on that concern was recorded.
The board heard that the district received a 2026–27 digital learning grant to fund procurement of Magic School AI, alongside discussion of district AI safeguards, student-data security, and plans to review guidance regularly. The board unanimously adopted the third reading of its educational equity and student-success policy. A school-funding presentation described the current referendum as providing about $30 million annually and discussed a planned 2028 renewal; administrators said failure to secure referendum funding could leave an estimated $40 million annual budget gap and require significant cuts. These discussions provided financial context but did not result in a new referendum or budget vote at this meeting.
