NOLA Public Schools community meeting on charter renewals and school-system planning, held October 5, 2026 (the title identifies it as the Oct. 1 MLK Community Meeting). District staff explained the charter renewal process for nine schools whose contracts end after the 2026–27 school year, the new accountability framework and state performance system, and the possibility of earlier revocation reviews for persistently low-performing schools. Renewal recommendations are anticipated at a special Orleans Parish School Board meeting on December 9. The superintendent also discussed Act 687 and board policy HG, which allow district capacity review and potential school closures or other changes regardless of charter contract terms; an over-capacity determination is due by November 15. Declining enrollment, projected enrollment levels, school finances, academic performance, and facility costs were cited as factors in future planning.
Community members questioned the transparency and criteria for possible closures or consolidations, raised concerns about enrollment and the OneApp placement process, and asked for meaningful community involvement and consideration of school legacies and student impacts. The superintendent said that future optimization decisions had not yet been determined and that further community engagement would take place in October and November. She clarified that Landry’s charter association had voted not to renew its charter, while the school’s future and building use remained undecided. No procurement awards, bids, purchases, spending motions, or budget allocations were identified at this meeting.
