At its October 6, 2026 work session and regular meeting, the Iowa City City Council approved moving the City Hall and Police Department elevator modernization project to bid. The estimated cost is $470,000; the work will refurbish the elevators, with a bid alternate for replacing the City Hall elevator carriage. The project is planned in two phases, with City Hall work scheduled for May–August and Police Department work for July–October. Following a public hearing, the council approved the action directing the city clerk to publish notice to bidders and set the time and place for receiving bids; the vote was unanimous, 6–0. No contract award or vendor selection was reported.

In a public works presentation, staff described the department’s $55.5 million annual budget and ongoing infrastructure responsibilities, including roughly 120–130 capital projects under engineering management. Staff also reported that landfill pavement is in place and the site is being used for compost production; an EPA grant supported the purchase of a compost turner. Court Street work is expected to pause before completion of Phase 2 and resume in spring. The council also discussed a regional data-center work group and school-boundary analysis, but no related procurement decisions were made.
