The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Board meeting on September 14, 2026, reviewed transportation funding, safety projects, planning targets, and regional transit needs. The board approved a minor amendment to the FY 2026–2029 Transportation Improvement Program, adding $16 million in National Highway Performance Program funds for preliminary engineering, final design, right-of-way, and construction for emergency repairs and replacement of a Conrail-related bridge in Warren County. The committee also discussed a separate $6 million increase for final design of the Route 440/Route 9 to Krill Street project in Middlesex County, bringing that phase’s funding to $24 million. Staff reported that a consultant contract had been awarded to support subregional studies and analysis of high-crash locations; no contractor or contract amount was identified.

The board also approved regional traffic-congestion performance targets and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality emissions-reduction targets. Staff described ongoing federally supported safety and trail projects, ferry-terminal investments, and grant programs, including the Safe Routes to School program. A presentation by the National Association of City Transportation Officials addressed street-safety practices, delivery and curb management, and support for local transportation agencies; it did not result in a procurement action. A public comment called for a clear NJ Transit roadmap for proposed weekend rail and seven-day bus service, but no funding decision was made on that request.
