At the October 5, 2026, regular meeting of the Winston-Salem City Council, the city manager announced that the Office of Housing and Development is preparing an RFP for a partner to acquire, rehabilitate, and manage the 77-unit Plaza Apartments over the long term. The process is to prioritize resident protections, including relocation assistance where needed and opportunities for residents to return, and the selected partner will be expected to leverage available funding. Council also approved, by a 6–2 vote, a resolution to sell surplus property in the Northeast Ward; the city was discussing a public auction planned for November 6. The proposed sale is a step toward a previously funded transformational center, envisioned to include community, workforce-development, health, and wellness services. Council unanimously approved accepting a 9.27-acre property item; discussion noted that additions associated with Long Creek Park total 70.74 acres, with gifts valued at $514,399.
The city manager also previewed a proposal for extended hours and programming at selected recreation centers, with options to use existing staff or add staff, for later committee consideration. Council approved demolition ordinances for three properties and considered other public-hearing items. After public comment, the motion to extend the youth protection ordinance failed. No contract award or vendor selection was made at this meeting.
