The LaPorte County Animal Shelter Advisory Committee met on October 1, 2026. The committee discussed several potential shelter purchases but made no procurement awards. Staff are collecting a third quote for replacing a two-ton air-conditioning unit serving the laundry room, adoptable-cat room, and meet-and-greet area; two quotes have been obtained, and possible outside county funding is being explored. Members also discussed planning for one replacement work vehicle, likely a van, as the current trucks approach high mileage. A reported $61,430 check may support a vehicle and replacement dog kennels, subject to the funds’ use requirements. No purchase amount or vendor selection was approved.
The committee also discussed preliminary talks with the City of La Porte about reimbursement for sheltering city animals and the possibility of a contract for animal-control services while the city’s animal-control position is vacant; no agreement was reached. The committee received shelter statistics and updates on a 501(c)(3) foundation filing, outreach events, and community-cat ordinance No. 2026-3, which commissioners had already approved. The committee approved the prior meeting minutes and took a separate motion concerning the shelter liaison through December 31, 2026; no spending action was identified in that motion.
