The City of Starkville Board of Aldermen held a work session on October 3, 2026. Parks and Recreation presented its 2026–27 business plan, including proposed accessibility improvements, facility and court repairs, trail work, added lighting, and parking-lot cameras. The skate park is expected to enter construction around November or December; an earthwork arrangement would use a fixed price per cubic yard, with total quantities dependent on site conditions. No specific project budgets were stated. The department also reported increased park use and event activity, including a reported combined economic impact of about $24.9 million for Cornerstone Park and Sportsplex.
The session reviewed items proposed for the board’s agenda, generally for consent, rather than recording final votes. These included advertising bids for an airport air-care facility, a South Montgomery generator, and substation voltage regulators; utility purchases and repairs; and Smithers’ design work for the North Jackson streetscape. For landfill work, five bids ranged from just under $1.9 million to nearly $3 million. Staff recommended proceeding past the low bidder after its qualifications review did not demonstrate relevant landfill experience; the county was to share part of the project cost. Other listed items included accepting a quote from Brent Barnett for water-treatment-building soffit and fascia work, a Berford quote for a spare well motor, and an 180-day moratorium on vehicle repair and maintenance uses in commercial-neighborhood districts while staff considers zoning amendments.
