The Riley County Commission meeting on October 1, 2026, included several spending and procurement actions. Commissioners approved a temporary construction easement for the University Park Lagoon facility, certified $46,866 in 2027 funding for the Riley County Conservation District, approved a 2027 services agreement with Big Lakes Development Center, and authorized a letter supporting Big Lakes’ KDOT transportation-assistance grant application. They also approved a malt beverage license for Brits Farm and payroll and accounts payable. No contract amounts were stated for the lagoon easement or Big Lakes agreement. The commission voted to exempt indigent-defense legal-services contract extensions from the Riley County procurement code’s requirements and directed the counselor’s office to negotiate extensions rather than pursue an RFP.
Commissioners discussed the county administrator recruitment process and a reported compensation range of approximately $160,000–$240,000; HR said the hiring maximum would be determined later, and no action was taken on compensation. Staff reported roughly $33,000 remaining in a local environmental-protection grant for wastewater assistance and discussed construction and remodeling costs for consolidating health-department staff, with a timeline and cost proposal expected later. The Noxious Weed and HHW department announced that, beginning January 1, 2027, it will no longer accept business hazardous waste at its facility, citing processing and transportation costs, while directing businesses to other disposal options. Commissioners also discussed potentially extending the data-center and battery-storage moratorium, but took no action on that matter.
