CTN Ann Arbor’s Safe Streets for All virtual open house on September 30, 2026, reviewed a federally funded demonstration project to install quick-build safety treatments on 10 corridors, covering about 14 miles. Ann Arbor received a $3.8 million Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. Planned work includes pavement markings, signage, flexible delineator posts, buffered bike lanes, bike boxes, hardened centerlines and paint-and-post pedestrian bump-outs. Grant restrictions rule out permanent hardscape changes and changes to roadway capacity. SmithGroup and TY Lin are supporting design; the city is also working with the University of Michigan on research into near-miss detection using existing cameras.
The city expects to finalize design and construction packages in late 2026 or early 2027, put the work out to bid, and begin construction in spring 2027. The grant will fund a one-time pavement-marking contract and purchase of city posts, including additional posts for replacements; ongoing pavement-marking maintenance is handled through separate city contracts. No contract award, vendor selection, or vote occurred at the meeting. The project is subject to evaluation through 2028, and the city said the demonstration treatments may remain in place depending on results.
