The Southfield Planning Commission meeting, identified by its title as September 30, 2026, considered several zoning matters. It unanimously recommended conditional rezoning PCZR26-00005 for the former Specs Howard site at 19900 West 9 Mile: about 0.33 acres for neighborhood commercial use and about 3 acres for multifamily residential use, with the existing building proposed for conversion to 56 apartments. The recommendation includes restrictions on uses such as gas stations, auto services, drive-through restaurants, and firearms establishments. The commission also unanimously recommended zoning text amendments to allow accessory dwelling units, update vocational-education terminology and permitted locations for career and technical education, and make certain government-owned public facilities permitted uses in single-family districts. These were recommendations or zoning actions, not contract awards.
In project and funding updates, commissioners were told that the Northland Towers Costco fuel center special land use had been approved; work remains contingent on completion of the related rezoning, and the project’s stated target is to begin construction in late spring or early summer 2027. The city was authorized to accept a $200,000 Oakland County Access to Transit grant, with a $40,000 local match, for possible bus-stop improvements such as shelters or sidewalk-gap work; no specific project selection or construction contract was approved at this meeting. The commission also unanimously approved cancelling its October 14 meeting.
