Whitman Select Board meeting — September 29, 2026. The board approved entering an intermunicipal agreement with the Southshore Household Hazardous Waste Depot. Members discussed the agreement’s uncertain future cost formulas, a reported $2,400 increase, existing program costs, and the planned regional facility in Hanover; staff said participating towns were seeking grant funding and that signatures were needed by the end of October to advance the project. The board also discussed outreach to residents about the service. A one-day liquor-license application was withdrawn at the applicant’s request. The board authorized the police chief to begin hiring for two anticipated vacancies, explaining that academy and training lead times make the hires different from creating new positions during the proposed hiring freeze.

Budget discussions included $1,123,115 in certified free cash, an estimated $3.9 million Plymouth County retirement assessment with a projected increase of about 7%, and the financial pressures associated with the South Shore Technical Schools building project and its anticipated first-year payment of about $1.9 million. The board discussed a possible hiring freeze and tighter spending review but did not establish a complete policy in the meeting. Staff reported progress on emergency-system and payroll software conversions, as well as work toward a financial-software timeline and contract documentation; no software contract award was reported. The board also discussed making future agendas and meeting dates clearer and creating an electronic read file.
