At its August 5, 2026, meeting, the Roseburg Schools Board approved a proposal of $179,600.04 from Freedom Fence for security fencing around Joe Lane Middle School’s athletic complex and to complete fencing around the school. The district said it solicited bids from three local vendors and Freedom Fence submitted the lowest quote; the company had also completed fencing at Fremont. Board members discussed preserving community access to recreational facilities through gates as part of the district’s planned dusk-to-dawn access approach, and requested follow-up on the fence’s precise placement. The motion passed, with Director Kubik opposed. The board also approved the consent agenda, which included a late employee leave-of-absence request and hiring a replacement high-school counselor.

The superintendent reported that roofing projects at Melrose and the district’s 1909 building were completed, and that asbestos abatement remains underway, with about 123 classrooms still on the district’s abatement list. A separate high-school locker-room project was delayed by supply and delivery issues; no contract amount was stated. The board heard that the district received an Oregon Department of Education summer-learning grant after an initial denial, but no grant amount was provided. A board member suggested setting aside funds to paint the theater; no action was taken. The board also approved staff designations and the 2026–27 committee roster.
