The City of Charlotte held a data center community engagement meeting on September 29, 2026, to explain the city’s review process and gather public feedback on potential impacts and zoning changes. Staff discussed the temporary pause on new data center applications, approved by City Council in June and scheduled to run through November 5 unless new regulations are adopted sooner. The pause does not affect existing or already-permitted facilities, with some exceptions for facilities supporting organizations such as healthcare providers, government agencies, and telecommunications providers. Staff noted that North Carolina’s SB 382 limits the city’s ability to restrict uses already allowed on a property. A public hearing on extending the moratorium was scheduled for October 12, with a Council vote planned for October 26.

Discussion covered zoning and buffers, water and wastewater capacity, drought priorities, energy demand, heat, noise, air quality, and environmental concerns. Charlotte Water said existing data centers use about 0.05% of the city’s water capacity and that developers pay for infrastructure modifications required by new development; existing data centers contributed approximately $1.17 million in city tax revenue in 2025. No contracts, bids, vendor selections, or procurement awards were identified. The meeting was informational and focused on community input for possible future regulations.
