Lane County Board of Commissioners work session, September 30, 2026: Interim County Counsel Mallerie B. reviewed the office’s workload and staffing needs. She reported about 61 active litigation matters, in addition to civil commitments, public-records requests, and day-to-day legal advice, and said the office remains down an attorney. The board had approved a supplemental budget the previous day for an executive assistant and a temporary attorney arrangement: the board-funded portion covers about half the attorney’s time, with CFAA dollars funding the remainder to support civil commitments. The executive assistant recruitment had received 36 applications. No spending vote was taken during this work session.

The interim counsel said one case had already been referred to outside counsel and that additional referrals may be needed, based on case-by-case review; she would return to the board if outside-counsel costs exceeded $100,000. Commissioners supported her judgment on workload and meeting attendance, invited her to identify whether another litigator is needed, and discussed a six-month check-in on the permanent county-counsel recruitment timeline. Later comments touched on wastewater-service expansion and the stabilization center and psychiatric hospital project, but no related contract award or purchasing action was reported. A commissioner also noted that the county had offered haulers a five-year tipping-fee reduction if they brought county-collected waste to Short Mountain Landfill; no haulers had responded, and no agreement was reported.
