Spring-Alameda Safety & Mobility Project 9/10/26

The City of Los Angeles held a groundbreaking event on September 10, 2026, to mark the start of the Spring-Alameda Safety and Mobility Project, a 1.2-mile corridor improvement aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users in Chinatown and downtown Los Angeles. The project includes protected bike lanes, upgraded curb ramps, new signalized pedestrian crossings, a bus boarding island, and transit amenities near the Chinatown Metro Station. It is part of a broader effort to improve transportation infrastructure ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Funding support was provided by regional partners including LA Metro and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), with SCAG contributing $3.3 million through its REIP 2.0 program to accelerate traffic safety projects in underinvested communities. The project is a collaborative effort involving multiple city departments, consulting firms, and community engagement teams, emphasizing community-driven development and multimodal transportation improvements.
