2025 Mayor's Innovation Challenge

The Kingston City Council held the 8th Annual Mayor's Innovation Challenge on March 15, 2025, showcasing innovative startup pitches primarily focused on addressing community challenges such as food waste, accessibility, and digital engagement. Several student teams presented technology-driven solutions including IoT-enabled smart scales to reduce food waste, AI-powered sign language translation tools, digital food management platforms, and AI-based bylaw interpretation services. The event emphasized collaboration with local businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations to pilot and scale these innovations. Two main prizes were awarded: the Dun and D Pandy Queens Innovation Center prize with $4,000 seed funding and admission to an entrepreneurial program went to the team "Hand Fluence," while the Public Sector Economic Development prize was awarded to "Lonica," an AI tool for simplifying municipal bylaws. The meeting highlighted opportunities for further city partnerships, mentorship, and funding to support these startups, particularly those addressing food security and community resilience.
