The City of Cottage Grove Economic Development Authority (EDA) held a special meeting on July 27, 2026, primarily to address the designation of the Majestic Ballroom as a substandard building. The building, vacant for over 20 years and in significant disrepair, was inspected by a contracted third party, LHB, which confirmed it was unsafe and beyond repair. The EDA voted unanimously to approve a resolution declaring the building substandard under state statute, a necessary step to enable future redevelopment efforts including the potential establishment of a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district. The city council had previously approved demolition bids and a deferred assessment waiver to front demolition costs, which the city will recoup upon sale of the property. The demolition is expected to begin within two weeks following a preconstruction meeting. This action is part of a long-term strategic initiative to revitalize the site as part of the Innovation Village development, though no immediate redevelopment is planned.
