Animal Shelter Advisory Committee 6-26-25

The City of San Angelo Animal Shelter Advisory Committee met on June 26, 2025, to review animal shelter operations and discuss procurement related to veterinary services. Contra Valley Paws, the contracted vendor for animal care and placement, provided a report on their activities, including adoptions, medical treatments funded through a compassion fund, and spay/neuter programs. A significant portion of the meeting focused on state and local legal requirements for animal care, impoundment, and euthanasia, emphasizing compliance with Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 821. Importantly, the committee discussed and considered publishing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for veterinary services to replace the current contract, aiming to maintain continuity of care and compliance with licensing and regulatory requirements. The RFP will be published with a scope of services including vaccine and medication procurement, shelter inspections, and regulatory assistance, with a goal to have a new contract in place by the end of August 2025. The committee also highlighted ongoing community outreach efforts such as free microchip clinics to improve pet recovery rates.
