The City of Murfreesboro Tennis and Pickleball Commission met on June 18, 2026, to discuss facility updates and a proposed zoning ordinance amendment related to outdoor pickleball courts. Facility updates included progress on shade structures and windscreens installation, as well as ongoing maintenance and improvements at Veterans Park, which is ahead of schedule for an anticipated November opening. The commission also addressed challenges related to increased pickleball usage, including enforcement of court usage rules and community concerns about noise and behavior. The planning department presented a draft zoning amendment to define outdoor pickleball courts as a distinct use, establish site plan requirements, and set parameters such as hours of operation, noise limits (47 decibels at the nearest residential property line), lighting, and buffering. The amendment exempts parks and schools and proposes permitting pickleball courts by right in certain commercial and industrial zones, with special use permits required in others. The commission provided feedback on the draft, with the planning department aiming to present it to the planning commission and city council in July and August 2026. No formal votes were taken by the commission on the zoning amendment, but members were encouraged to provide input during upcoming public hearings.
