The City of Flint held a press conference on August 1, 2024, to announce enhancements to the Homeownership Property Exemption (HOPE) program aimed at providing property tax relief to vulnerable residents, particularly those on fixed incomes. The program currently offers exemptions based on 150% of the national poverty level, but starting January 1, 2025, this threshold will increase to 200%, allowing more families to qualify for a 50% reduction in their residential property taxes. The initiative, championed by Vice President of City Council Candace Mashad and supported by city officials including the City Assessor, will be presented for a council vote on August 7, 2024. The program excludes certain fees such as garbage pickup and street lighting but is expected to provide significant financial relief amid rising inflation and property values. Applications are currently being accepted both online and in person at City Hall and CLE Road.
