2026 Black History Month Celebration

The City of Hammond, Indiana held its 2026 Black History Month Celebration on February 5, 2026. The event honored several local Black-led nonprofit organizations that contribute significantly to the community through youth mentorship, social services, scholarships, and advocacy. Organizations recognized included the ExCeL Youth Program, Hope Angels Fund, Prom Genie Two, Hammond Alumni Association, Ministerial Alliance of Hammond and Vicinity, NZT Glory Zone Community Outreach Coalition, Four Quarters for Life Community Organization, New Hope College Day, Candice D Tyler Memorial Scholarship Fund, and Healing Broken Hearts. The program featured speeches from city officials, including Chief of Staff Scott Miller, and included a proclamation from Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. proclaiming February 2026 as Black History Month in Hammond. While the meeting focused on community recognition and celebration, it did not include procurement, contracting, or budget discussions.
