At the November 5, 2026 Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board approved the acquisition of tax parcel 037011-02, approximately 556.070 acres, from Charlotte Broadcasting LLC for $12 million for parks and recreation and housing. The motion carried with one vote opposed. Commissioners also approved $3,676,873.33 in maternal and child health escrow funding through FY 2028 to support redesigned public health services and affected staff during the Medicaid care-management transition; the board endorsed the transition plan. A separate $25,000 emergency allocation from the unrestricted contingency fund for the Center for Community Transitions passed. Consent actions included a Marshall Center roof-replacement construction contract, Duke lighting service contracts for Elsie Coleman and Hartsdale parks, and a Duke Endowment grant application for infant and early childhood mental health; no amounts or vendors beyond those named were stated for these items.
The county manager reported revised Discovery Place Nature Museum lease negotiations: a proposed repayment of the remaining $13.7 million in gap funding over five years, with annual payments of about $2.7 million beginning November 20, 2026, and a proposed 35-year lease at $1 per year. Commissioners raised concerns about financial assurances, lease terms, naming rights, and public access. No vote was taken; the agreement is to return to the board. Public testimony also urged coordination of Greenway planning with stream-restoration work and exploration of a historic-site park partnership, but no action was taken on those requests.
