The Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission meeting on November 5, 2026, considered several development and zoning requests; no procurement, contract awards, or spending decisions were identified. The commission approved on consent Drake University’s request to rezone property near 2419 University Avenue from the University Square Legacy PUD to MX-2 for commercial uses, with a related PUD plan amendment, and a site plan/design alternative for a carport at 5011 Southwest 8th Street. It also approved a design alternative for a single-unit infill home at 1933 Burson Street, despite neighborhood concerns about parking, lot size, and access. The commission approved the prior meeting’s minutes as well.

For 3205 62nd Street, the commission approved a design alternative allowing an existing 479-square-foot home at the front of the lot to remain as an accessory dwelling while a larger home is built behind it. The approval modified the staff recommendation to allow either a paved or permeable-paver driveway to the new home’s garage. Commissioners discussed stormwater concerns and noted that some issues raised about accessory-dwelling-unit ownership and short-term rentals were outside the city’s authority under state law.
