# New Bern Historic Preservation Commission Design Review Meeting November 4, 2026

**Body:** City of New Bern
**Date:** November 03, 2026
**Jurisdiction:** SLED

The New Bern Historic Preservation Commission’s November 4, 2026 design review meeting considered two Certificate of Appropriateness projects. At 1119 North Craven Street, commissioners discussed a proposed 3-by-8-foot, prefabricated storage shed with a metal roof, along with related site details. They found the design generally consistent with the standards, but noted that sheds are classified as major work and must proceed to a formal COA hearing; staff was asked to have the application show the shed’s location and dimensions clearly. At 425 Pollock Street, the representative for First Baptist Church presented a proposed standing-seam metal roof over an outdoor area on a non-contributing building. Commissioners raised no substantive objections, and the project was expected to be considered at an upcoming formal meeting. Design review discussions are nonbinding, and no formal votes were taken. No procurement activity was identified.

The commission also discussed preparing a redline of proposed design-principles and standards revisions, with public comment anticipated before the changes proceed through Planning and Zoning and the Board of Aldermen. Members considered whether small, temporary sheds could be treated as minor work in future cases. Other discussion covered preservation-by-neglect properties and enforcement options, recognition of preservation award recipients, and planning for a statewide preservation conference in New Bern next year. No contracts, vendor selections, spending approvals, or budget allocations were discussed.
