The Salinas Public Art Commission held a special meeting on November 2, 2026. A resident asked the commission to explore a grant opportunity for a recurring fantastical-animal art festival. Commissioners and presenters discussed building on the recent Alebrijes/Nahuales exhibition, including a possible 2027 project with local artists, workshops, and broader community participation. The presentation reported eight sculptures at five locations, more than one million social-media impressions during the opening weekend, and a 17% increase in traffic at Northridge Mall during the exhibit. These were discussed as evidence of community and economic impact; no new grant, contract, vendor selection, or spending allocation was approved.
The commission approved a motion to establish a subcommittee of three commissioners to work with staff on the FY 2027–28 annual public art plan, which staff said must be brought to the City Council before April 1. The plan will return to the full commission for consideration. The commission also elected Carlos Cortez as chair and Juan Carlos Gonzalez as vice chair, and approved the June 15, 2026 meeting minutes. No specific procurement amounts or contract numbers were identified.
